Jericoacoara (Vila de Jericoacoara), often simply called “Jeri” for short, is a picturesque coastal village on the north coast of Brazil, known for its stunning sand dunes, pristine beaches and laid-back atmosphere. Originally a remote fishing village, Jericoacoara has developed into a popular destination for nature lovers, surfers and beach vacationers.

- Jericoacoara is located in the state of Ceará in the municipality of “Jijoca de Jericoacoara”. The capital of the administrative district of Fortaleza is about 300 kilometers away.
- Nestled in the dunes of the Jericoacoara National Park (Parque Nacional de Jericoacoara), the village offers a spectacular backdrop with endless sandy beaches, turquoise waters and a relaxed atmosphere.
- Popular activities include windsurfing, kitesurfing and sandboarding on the region’s high dunes. Jeri is one of the best windsurfing and kitesurfing spots in the world.
- Translated, Jericoacoara means “turtle cave”.
- Jeri is also known for its unique natural beauty, including the Duna do Pôr do Sol dune, from where visitors can enjoy spectacular sunsets over the sea.
- The village itself has a relaxed atmosphere and a lively scene with cozy restaurants, bars and stores.
- Cars are not allowed in the sandy streets of Jericoacoara, which contributes to the charming and relaxed atmosphere of the village.
- Near Jeri is the idyllic Lagoa do Paraíso lagoon, which is a popular place to relax and swim with its clear, calm waters and swinging hammocks.
- The tree growing on its side, the Árvore da Preguiça (Lazy tree) , the Praia do Preá and Buraco Azul – Lagoa do Carneiro , a turquoise-colored bathing lake, are also not far away and can be reached with a short buggy ride.
- If required, Jericoacoara can be combined with a visit to Lençóis Maranhenses , about 400 km away. The extensive dune landscape of the Parque Nacional dos Lençóis Maranhenses is known for its seasonal freshwater lagoons.

Jericoacoara is located in the coastal region of northern Brazil and has a tropical climate with high temperatures and a pronounced dry and rainy season. The region is known for its constant trade winds that blow almost all year round, making it a paradise for windsurfers and kitesurfers.
The dry season from July to December is dry and sunny. There is little to no rain. The rainy season lasts from January to June. Heavy rainfall can occur during these months, especially between February and May.

Getting to and from Jericoacoara is a bit of an adventure, as the village is remote and not directly accessible by car.

- Most trips to Jericoacoara start with a flight to Fortaleza to the international airport Pinto Martins (IATA code: FOR) or to the regional airport of Jericoacoara (Comandante Ariston Pessoa) (IATA code: JJD).
- After arriving in Fortaleza, travelers can either take a bus or rent a car to cover the approximately 300 kilometers to Jericoacoara.
- The journey by bus usually takes 6 to 7 hours, by car 4 to 6 hours depending on the road conditions and route.
- In addition to the road transfer, there is also the option of a slightly longer buggy tour through secluded beaches and fishing villages along the coast from Fortaleza to Jericoacoara.
- The last 15 to 20 kilometers through the dunes to Jeri are not asphalted and can therefore only be driven on with off-road vehicles such as four-wheel drive vehicles or buggies.

Duna do Pôr do Sol

The “Duna do Pôr do Sol” is a natural sand dune in Jericoacoara. The name literally means “dune of the sunset” and refers to its main attraction. One of the most beautiful sunsets in South America takes place here.

- The dune is a popular meeting place for tourists and locals to enjoy the spectacular sunset over the sea.
- This is one of the few places where a so-called “emerald sunset” occurs. During an “emerald sunset”, the sky turns green for a millisecond before the sun disappears completely behind the horizon.

- During their performances, the bands play typical Brazilian songs such as “Más Que Nada”, “La Bamba” or “Chorando Se Foi (Lambada)”.

- The name “Pedra Furada” means “perforated rock” in Portuguese and refers to a large rock formation with a natural hole that penetrates the rock.
- This natural formation was created by thousands of years of erosion by wind and water.
- The arch-shaped rock formation is considered a cultural and spiritual symbol and is often regarded as a sacred site by the locals.
- Many legends and stories surround Pedra Furada, which has a special significance for the indigenous peoples of the region.
- The Trilha da Pedra Furada is an approximately 1.5 kilometer long hiking trail and leads through a fascinating landscape consisting of sand dunes, beaches and a variety of flora and fauna.
- Pedra Furada should not be confused with Boqueirão da Pedra Furada . Various skeletons and objects were found during excavations in the Serra da Capivara National Park in the state of Piauí. However, it is particularly famous for its rock paintings.
